Suffering arises from ignorant giving.

Having obtained this human life and body is solely due to past meritorious deeds (kusala). What kind of merit? Merit performed without wisdom of Truth. Because one gave in past lives with ignorance (avijjā)—unaware of Truth—this present human body now manifests as the Noble Truth of Suffering (dukkha sacca). Is this human existence happiness? Is it the happiness of Path-knowledge? Or is it the Truth of Suffering? It is only the Truth of Suffering. Realizing that human, celestial, and Brahma realms are all indeed the Truth of Suffering, one gives alms out of revulsion toward this great suffering, hatred toward it, non-desire for it, and longing only for liberation from suffering. Thus, the act of giving becomes that of a person endowed with wisdom of Truth. Truly, one may initially know this conceptually as "the great Truth of Suffering." But when you meditate and observe, this body will reveal itself—shifting, changing, itching, aching, throbbing, stiffening—one affliction after another. This is because it is the Truth of Suffering; it shows suffering. Seeing this, the body is directly known as the Truth of Suffering—no longer mere book knowledge. It becomes experiential wisdom. At this moment of direct insight, the Venerable Mogok Sayadaw taught: "Seeing this suffering now, may I be freed from the round of suffering! Give alms by the thousands, by the tens of thousands!" Indeed! When you truly see and personally realize reality, it is no longer someone else’s teaching about "the Truth of Suffering." Your own body speaks. You cannot disbelieve. When you sit, the body will show stiffness, pain, aches, numbness. What does it constantly show? Only the Truths of Suffering. Therefore, change your motivation: "Longing only for Nibbāna—the cessation of suffering—and desiring never to experience this Truth of Suffering again, we disciples give alms by the thousands, by the tens of thousands!" Only giving in this way—with revulsion and hatred toward suffering (vaṭṭa dukkha)—becomes "the gift that liberates from the round of existence." Remember this clearly: This is the gift of liberation. Whenever and wherever you give, nurture this intention. Giving thus transforms your act of generosity into a great liberating offering. If not, it becomes "With ignorance as condition, volitional formations arise" (avijjā paccayā saṅkhārā)—thus performing the Truth of the Origin of Suffering (samudaya sacca). If asked, "Is this giving, or performing samudaya sacca?"—it becomes samudaya sacca. Giving without wisdom of Truth is samudaya sacca. Performing samudaya sacca only yields the five aggregates—the Truth of Suffering (dukkha sacca). Thus, the act of giving becomes fuel for the round of suffering (vaṭṭa): From (1) [ignorance] to (2) [formations], (2) to (3) [consciousness], (3) inevitably leads to (4) [name-and-form], and from (4) back to (1). This is called "the cycle of existence" (vaṭṭa). Therefore: - One who gives with wisdom of Truth is liberated from the round. - One who gives without wisdom of Truth obtains only the Truth of Suffering after death and returns to the round. Observe your present body: It is the body obtained from past ignorant giving. You are in section (2) [of Dependent Origination]. Where did this life begin? It began with birth (jāti), with rebirth-linking consciousness (paṭisandhi viññāṇa) in this life. Thus, consciousness here means paṭisandhi viññāṇa. Following consciousness comes mind-and-matter (nāmarūpa), then the six sense bases (saḷāyatana), contact (phassa), and feeling (vedanā). Therefore, birth itself—paṭisandhi—is the Noble Truth of Suffering ("jātipi dukkhasaccā"). From its very beginning, this existence started with suffering. This makes clear: The body obtained from ignorant giving is only the Truth of Suffering. Venerable Dr. Ashin Pāramī
