Verbs (19) - Modal Verbs

7. Will or Would

အဓိကအားျဖင့္ Will ကို အနာဂတ္မွာ ဘာျဖစ္မယ္ဆုိတာေျပာဖုိ႔၊ ဘာလုပ္ခ်င္တယ္စသည့္ ဆႏၵကိုေျပာဖို႔၊ ကတိေပးျခင္း ကမ္းလွမ္းျခင္းျပဳလုပ္ဖုိ႔အတြက္သံုးတယ္။ Would ကို will ရဲ႕ past tense အေနနဲ႔ အတိအေၾကာင္းေျပာဖို႔၊ စိတ္ကူးထားတာေတြ တင္စားထားတာေတြ ေျပာဖို႔၊ ယဥ္ယဥ္ေက်းေက်းေျပာဖုိ႔သံုးတယ္။

Beliefs

အနာဂတ္မွာ ျဖစ္မယ္လုိ႔ ယံုၾကည္ရတာေတြအတြက္သံုးတယ္။

We’ll be late.

We will have to take the train.

Past tense of will အျဖစ္ would ကုိသံုးတယ္။

I thought it would be late, so I would have to take the train.

Offers and Promises

Offers and promises လုပ္ဖို႔ I will, we will တို႔ကုိသံုးတယ္။

I’ll give you a lift home after the party.

We will come and see you next week.

Willingness

လုပ္ခ်င္တာ ဆႏၵရွိတာေျပာဖုိ႔သံုးတယ္။

We will see you tomorrow.

Perhaps dad will lend me the car.

Would- as the past tense of will

We had a terrible night. The baby wouldn’t go to sleep. He kept waking up and crying.

Dad wouldn’t lend me the car, so we had to take the train.

အတိတ္က ကုိယ္လုပ္ခ်င္လုိ႔ လုပ္ခဲ့တာေတြေျပာဖုိ႔အတြက္လဲ would ကိုသံုးတယ္။

When they were children they used to spend their holidays at their grandmother’s at the seaside. They would get up early every morning and they’d have a quick breakfast then they would run across the road to the beach.

Conditionals

Will ကို if, unless ပါတဲ့၀ါက်ေတြမွာ ယခု သို႔မဟုတ္ ေနာင္ ျဖစ္မယ္လို႔ စဥ္းစားထားတာေတြအတြက္ သံုးတယ္။

I’ll give her a call if I can find her number. (နံပါတ္ေတြ႕ရင္ေတာ့ ဖုန္းေခၚမယ္၊ မေတြ႕ရင္ မေခၚဘူး။)

You won’t get in unless you have a ticket. (ticket မပါရင္ မ၀င္ရဘူး၊ ပါရင္ေတာ့ ၀င္လုိ႔ရတယ္)

ျဖစ္ႏုိင္တယ္၊ တကယ္ေတာ့ မျဖစ္ခဲ့တာေတြ (hypotheses) ေျပာဖုိ႔ would ကုိသံုးတယ္။

It would be very expensive to stay in a hotel.

If, what if ပါတဲ့ conditionals ေတြမွာလဲ would ကိုသံုးတယ္။ Main verb က past tense ျဖစ္ရမယ္။

I would give her a call if I could find her number.

If I had the money I’d buy a new car.

You would lose weigh if you took more exercise.

If he got a new job he would probably make more money.

What if he lost his job. What would happen then?

Conditions ေတြကို အႀကံေပးဖို႔လဲ သံုးတယ္။

Dan will help you if you ask him.

Past tenses are more polite.

Dan would help you if you asked him.

Phrases with would

Would you….? Would you mind (not)-ing? for request

Would you carry this for me please?

Would you mind carrying this? (ဒါေလး သယ္ေပးရတာ အေႏွာက္အယွက္မ်ားျဖစ္ေနမလား။ အပန္းမႀကီးရင္ ဒါေလးသယ္ေပးပါလားလုိ႔ ေျပာတာ။)

Would you mind not telling him this?

Would you like…? Would you like to….? for offers and invitations

Would you like to come round tomorrow?

Would you like another drink?

I would like…. I’d like…. (you) (to)… to say what we want or what we want to do

I’d like that one please.

I’d like to go home now.

I’d like you to go to the station.

I’d rather… (I would rather) to say what we prefer

I’d rather have that one.

I’d rather go home now.

I would think, I would imagine, I’d guess, to give an opinion when we are not sure or when we want to be polite

It’s very difficult I would imagine.

I would think that’s the right answer.
