Regarding Aselaka Kassapa’s Third Question: The next two questions were not actually about philosophical views (diṭṭhi). They were merely accusations against the Buddha himself. When asked, "Is there no suffering (dukkha)?" the Buddha answered, "There is." From the moment this body arises, we encounter the Truth of Suffering (Dukkha Sacca). Whatever arises within this body—be it sensation (vedanā), mind (citta), or any other phenomenon—is nothing but suffering. This very body is suffering. The Five Aggregates (khandhas) themselves are suffering. What arises from them is suffering. Sores manifest on this body, diseases occur, injuries happen—all are suffering. Worry, grief, sorrow, despair, mental anguish—all are suffering. Who would dare claim there is no suffering? As long as this body exists, the suffering inherent to it is unavoidable. One may amass all the wealth in the world, yet suffering persists so long as the body remains. This entire body is the ...

The Second Question: Is suffering caused by another? The second question is: "Is suffering caused by another?" Suffering arises as the Noble Truth of Dukkha – the five aggregates – due to past ignorance (avijjā) and formations (saṅkhāra). Ignorance and formations themselves are the Noble Truth of the Origin (Samudaya). This aggregate-body we have is not created by another. It arises due to cause and effect. Because of the cause (Samudaya), the effect (Dukkha) arises. Since there is only cause and effect, it cannot be that "I do it" or "another does it." If one says "suffering is caused by another," it implies the doer is one person and the sufferer is another. This severs cause and effect. If the doer is one and the experiencer of the result is another, cause and effect are severed, leading to the wrong view of annihilationism (ucchedadiṭṭhi). "I am the doer and I am the experiencer" implies Eternalism (sassatadiṭṭhi). "Another...

The Story of Acelaka Kassapa (1)

Image
(Based on the story of Acelaka Kassapa as expounded by the Venerable Mogok Sayadaw.) While the Blessed One was on alms round in the city of Rajagaha, he encountered Acelaka Kassapa. As was the custom of the Titthis (ascetics of other sects), Acelaka Kassapa was going for alms naked, without any clothing. Upon seeing the Buddha, he felt the desire to ask questions. He approached the Buddha and requested permission to ask. Only after asking for permission three times did the Blessed One grant him leave. Having received permission, Acelaka Kassapa asked the Buddha six questions: 1. `Venerable Gotama, is suffering created by oneself?´ `No.´ 2. `Is suffering created by another?´ `No.´ 3. `Is suffering created by both oneself and another?´ `No.´ 4. `Does suffering arise spontaneously (without cause)?´ `No.´ 5. `Does suffering not exist?´ `It exists.´ 6. `Is suffering not known?´ `It is known.´ Analysis of the Questions and Answers: The Buddha answere...
